Every major ad platform now leans heavily on automation. Google’s Smart Bidding, Meta’s Advantage+ campaigns and TikTok’s optimization all learn from the conversion data you send them. If that data is missing, duplicated or wrong, the algorithms optimize toward the wrong outcome — and your reports tell a misleading story.
1. Define what counts as a conversion
Start with a short measurement plan: which actions matter (purchase, qualified lead, booked call), which are secondary (add to cart, form start), and what each is worth. Optimize campaigns toward the primary actions only.
2. Clean up Google Tag Manager
- One container, with clear naming for tags, triggers and variables.
- No hard-coded duplicate tags in the theme alongside GTM.
- Use GTM’s Preview mode to confirm each event fires once, on the right action.
3. Configure GA4 key events
Mark your primary actions as key events in GA4, check that ecommerce or lead events include the right parameters, and confirm data appears in real-time reports.
4. Add server-side conversion APIs
Browser-based pixels can miss conversions because of ad blockers, browser privacy features and cookie limits. Server-side options — Meta Conversions API, TikTok Events API and Snap Conversions API — send events from your server as well. Set up event deduplication so the same conversion isn’t counted twice.
5. Use enhanced and offline conversions where relevant
Google Ads enhanced conversions can improve match rates using hashed first-party data. For lead generation, importing offline conversions (such as qualified leads or closed deals from your CRM) teaches the platform which leads are actually valuable.
6. Respect consent requirements
If you have visitors in regions with consent laws, such as the EEA and UK, use a consent banner and Google Consent Mode so tags behave according to each visitor’s choice.
7. Reconcile before you trust
Compare platform-reported conversions with GA4 and your real sales or CRM data. Platforms use different attribution windows and often claim the same conversion, so the totals won’t match exactly — but large gaps signal a tracking problem worth fixing before you scale.
